Beauty for Ashes Ministry was established in 2009 as a prison ministry. The ministry was founded by Derk and Gina Hanna as a redemption story from Gina’s struggle with addiction that led to incarceration. On her journey to freedom, she learned to fight addiction as a spiritual battle. She learned to identify the lies of the enemy that led to bondage and replaced those lies with truth found in God’s word. That truth set her free and put her on a mission to teach others how to find their freedom and identity in Jesus Christ.
Beauty for Ashes operates programs in prisons in Missouri and Kansas. Our programs focus on inner healing, discipleship, and discovering God’s purpose for their lives. They learn their purpose begins today, not when they are released. Learning to walk in their new found freedom and identity while in prison results in a successful re entry back into the community as they stand on God’s promises to provide, redeem and restore. For those that will never leave prison, they learn to live with an eternal perspective and discover the prison is their mission field.
In 2021, Beauty for Ashes expanded their programs out into the community through the establishment of Shielded by Faith Recovery Center. This is a year long residential recovery program. This program focuses on transformation not treatment. Residents learn to heal the wounds from their past through the work of the cross. They rebuild on the truth and promises of God’s word. Through courses and work therapy they build life and employability skills that set them up for success after graduation.
